Japan has more than 21,000 horse races a year at over thirty race tracks. There are three different types of racing events: flat racing, jump racing (races over hurdles) and, unique to Japan, racing in which horses pull sleds weighing from about half a ton to one ton along a 200-meter straight track with two built-in hills (the Ban'ei is a breed of horse native to Japan, descended from the Percheron, Breton, and Belgian breeds).
Of all the Grade 1 stakes in Japan, The Japan Cup by far the biggest, and is quickly becoming one of the world's most prestigious races. Held at Tokyo race course, it features an invitational field of Japanese and international runners in a 10 furlong race for a total purse of about $4.6 million.
Overall, betting turnover in Japan is number one worldwide, with total flat and jump purses ranking second. Globally, Japan also breeds the fourth highest number of thoroughbreds. |
