Racing in South Africa got a huge boost when they started entering runners in the Dubai Racing Carnival--and cleaning up the competition. The quality of horses and training in South Africa is very high, and the racing is always exciting in their many major events as well as day-to-day contests.
The premier meet is the Durban July Handicap, which has been run since 1897 at Greyville Racecourse. It is the largest and most prestigious event on the continent, with betting running into the hundreds of millions of rands.
Other major races include the Summer Cup at Turffontein Racecourse in Johannesburg and The J & B Met, which is held at Kenilworth race track in Cape Town. Interesting to note, in the Southern Hemisphere all horses age a year on August 1st regardless of birth date. |
Racing schedule:
Virtually seven days a week starting in April.

Special Notes:
All wagers are co-mingled directly to the host tracks in South Africa.
All Place wagers pay to the top three finishers.
In the event more than 20 horses are entered in a given race, entries 20 and above will be coupled in a Mutuel Field (20F, 21F, 22F and so on) and will race as a single betting interest.
South African racing is broadcast on the same channel as UK Racing. While watching video of racing from South Africa, you may notice other races being broadcast from the UK. This is normal and is not an indication of a problem with the South African video feed.
