Trotting is almost a national sport in Sweden, eclipsing thoroughbred racing in scope and popularity. In fact, Elitloppet at Solvalla race course is not only one of the world's largest and most prestigious trotting races (the overall purse for 2008 was €650,000, or about $1,025,000 USD), it's actually one of Sweden's biggest sporting events: More than 50,000 visitors from around the world usually show up.
The most common distance for Swedish trotting races is 2140 meters (about 10 1/2 furlongs), and in handicapped races, the horses start from different distances. There are two starting methods used in Sweden: Volt starts are the most commonly used, in which the horses circle each other until the signal to start and the horses get into a line; Auto starts use the standard method of horses lining up behind a car with starting wings. After the post parade, the horses do a trial start at race speed so that spectators can assess each horses' chances for the race. |
