Since the advent of the first Dubai World Cup back in 1995, Dubai has worked to become a world capital of horse racing. In addition to the World Cup, serious competition can be found year round for both Thoroughbred (from all over the world) and Purebred Arabian (mostly UAE and French) horses.
In a world first, Dubai will be opening in 2010 the horse racing-specific city of Meydan, which will also be the new home of the Dubai World Cup. The racing city will cover an area of over 70 million square feet (1,600+ acres) and will include a 60,000 capacity grandstand, 10 restaurants, a hotel, racing museum and the headquarters of The Dubai Racing Club.
Nad Al Sheba will host its last Dubai World Cup on Saturday, March 28. With a whopping purse of $6-million (US), the World Cup is the richest race in the world and, as such, attracts many of the worldÃs best thoroughbred racehorses. With over $21-million in total stakes races, the Dubai World Cup program is also the single richest day of racing in the world. |
