Since the advent of the first Dubai World Cup back in 1995, Dubai has worked hard to become a world capital of horse
racing. In a world first, Dubai opened the horse racing-specific city of Meydan, which will also be the new home of the Dubai World Cup in 2010. The racing city covers an area of over 70 million square feet (1,600+ acres) and includes a 60,000 capacity grandstand, 10 restaurants, a hotel, racing museum and the headquarters of The Dubai Racing Club.
Meydan will host its first Dubai World Cup on Saturday, March 27. With a whopping purse of $10-million (US), the World Cup is the richest race in the world and, as such, attracts many of the world's best thoroughbred horses. With over $26-million in total stakes races, the Dubai World Cup program is also the single richest day of racing in the world. |
