If you find yourself out on the apron with the punters placing bets with a beard, you know you're at a UK horse race. Racing is far and away one of the most popular spectator sports in the UK, with racing nearly every day of the year. There are a total of 61 racecourses in the UK, both flat racing and national hunt.
National Hunt is the official name for jump racing, which is divided into steeplechasing and hurdling: Steeplechases (like the Cheltenham Gold
Cup) are run over distances from 2 to 4 1/2 miles in which horses have to jump fixed fences of at least 4 1/2 feet high; Hurdle races cover distances of between 2 to 3 1/2 miles, and usually involve smaller, less rigid obstacles at least 3 1/2 feet high. You'll find plenty of action in both types, and plenty of high stakes purses as well.
UK horses are some of the finest runners in the world, and you'll see them entered in competitions from Dubai to Del Mar. All modern-day thoroughbreds can be traced to one of three great English sires in the following percentages: The Darley Arabian - 90%; The Byerly Turk - 5%; and The Godolphin Arabian or Barb - 5%. |

Special Notes:
UK racing is broadcast on the same channel as South African racing. While watching video of racing from the UK, you may notice other races being broadcast from South Africa. This is normal and is not an indication of a problem with the UK video feed.
In the event more than 20 horses are entered in a race, horses 20 and above will run as a single betting interest as the mutuel field. All horses that are part of the mutuel field will be designated as such with the letter "F" following their program number, such as 20F, 21F, 22F and so on.
In races that include a Field entry, all wagers placed from betting sites outside the U.K. shall be co-mingled in a separate betting pool and will not be co-mingled directly to the host track in the U.K.
A maximum of 24 entries (horses) will appear on the Youbet.com track program. In the event a race has more than 24 entries, entries 25 and upward may be viewed by downloading the free past performances in the Handicapping Products area.
In U.K. racing, all Place wagers pay to the top three finishers.
For all races with 20 or fewer horses, the following betting pools will be co-mingled directly to the host track in the U.K.--Win, Place, Exacta.
All Trifecta, Superfecta, Double, Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers will be co-mingled in separate "international pools" hosted in South Africa.
