If you fancy a new online casino challenge, why not give Mississippi Stud poker a try? It’s one of the lesser know poker games at TwinSpires Casino, but its strategic gameplay deserves a little more recognition in our book.
One of the attractions of Mississippi Stud online is that you do not have to play against other players or the dealer. Instead, a bit like video poker games, you are just trying to make a decent poker hand.
Before we begin, we should state that it really does help if you understand the basics of poker – in that you must make the best hand that you can from five cards – two of your own and three community cards dealt in the middle of the table. The rules follow the common poker hand rankings.
When you take a seat online, you will see an ante betting box, then three further betting areas called 3rd Street, 4th Street, and 5th Street.
First, place your desired opening bet in the Ante box. Keep it low because you must make more bets to continue in the hand. Once your ante is in place, the hand is dealt. You get two cards face-up, while three community cards are dealt face down.
In this game, you begin to win money if you make a hand of a pair of jacks or better (pairs of 6s to 10s are a push). Your first decision is whether your two cards are promising or not. If you get dealt junk, you can elect to fold at this point and lose your ante bet. But if you wish to play on, and see the first of the three community cards, called the 3rd street, you must make another bet equal to, or 2x or 3x your initial ante, and place it in the 3rd street betting box.
After the first community card is revealed, you must go through the same process for the 4th and 5th streets.
If you have a winning hand by the time you get to the end of the round, you win money back from the casino according to the paytable. Payouts may vary from one casino to another, but a typical paytable will be:
Like most other table games, there is a side bet option in Mississippi Stud poker. This is called the 3 card bonus. You can place your money in this box before the cards are dealt, and the wager can be higher than your initial ante, should you wish.
You will win regardless of what happens in the main game because the bonus requires you to make a three-card hand from the three community cards only. Again, payouts may vary, but typically the bonus paytable is:
Although this is a game of chance, since you cannot predict the turn of a card, you can increase your chances of making a profit by some simple strategic plays.
For instance, if you have made a qualifying pair on your own two cards, then bet the maximum 3x on 3rd, 4th, and 5th street. Likewise, bet the max on remaining streets whenever you make a hand. When this happens, you cannot lose, so it makes sense to have as much money on the table as possible.
Mediocre starting hands, like connectors or suited connectors, are worth playing because you can make a straight or a flush while still having the chance of making at least a pair. If your starting cards are junk, it’s generally worth folding, losing your ante, and moving on.
With a possible RTP of 98%, Mississippi Stud poker is a great game to play when you want to have fun without risking losing a lot of cash fast.
