NCAAB Power Rankings: Kansas finishes on top

Despite the uncertainty swirling around college basketball, there is little uncertainty at the moment regarding who the top teams in the nation are. Let’s break down our top 10 in this week’s NCAAB Power Rankings!

1. Kansas (28-3)

The Jayhawks survived a road upset bid by Texas Tech to end the regular season as they held off a scrappy Red Raiders team for a four point win. Udoka Azubuike yet again carried them, going for 15 points and 11 rebounds in the win. The No. 1 overall seed is locked in come tournament time.

2. Gonzaga (31-2)

The Bulldogs clinched another number-one seed with their eighth straight West Coast Conference, after an 18-point win over St Mary’s in the conference championship game. They squeaked by in the semifinal, winning by just four in a game where they made only three pointers. That poor three point shooting continued in the title game, as they made just five of fifteen attempts, and might be something to keep an eye on come the Big Dance.

3. Dayton (29-2)

The Flyers did just that in their season finale, destroying George Washington by 25 to secure an unbeaten run through the Atlantic 10 conference. Obi Toppin pulled off the dunk of the year, with a between-the-legs flush that brought the house down. The first A10 Player of the Year in Dayton history, Toppin will be one of the stars to watch come tournament time. 

4. Baylor (26-4)

The Bears have now lost three of their last five games. Their inability to hit three-pointers at a consistent clip continues to be their Achilles’ heel, but their stellar defense has slipped of late. Four of their last five opponents have scored more than one point per possession, a stat they ranked second nationally in just a few weeks ago. They also missed seven of 17 attempts from the charity stripe, which has been a common theme in their losses.

5. Florida State (26-5)

The Seminoles held on to win their first ever ACC regular season championship, as they dominated Boston College at home in their season finale. They were dominant on defense, forcing the Eagles into 19 turnovers and holding them to just 33% shooting from the field. The Seminoles played an astounding 17 different players, allowing all their seniors to get into the game.

6. Creighton (24-7)

The Bluejays finished their season off with a convincing 17-point victory over the No. 8 Seton Hall Pirates, shooting 14-of-26 from downtown and turning the ball over just five times in the win. Defensively, they are playing quite well as of late, as they have now defeated five ranked opponents in the last five weeks, but two blowout defeats do cause a bit of concern. This team seems to live or die with how Marcus Zegarowski plays, as he scored a combined eight points in their two defeats during this run, but has scored 17 or more in six of the last seven wins.  

7. Michigan State (22-9)

Sparty won their fourth straight game against a ranked opponent when they defeated Ohio State 80-69 over the weekend. Michigan State has won six of their last seven, their only defeat coming to a ranked Maryland team, and are playing as well as anybody over the past month. Cassius Winston scored 27 points in his final game at home in the win, and is on fire heading into postseason play.

8. San Diego State (30-2)

The Aztecs have likely lost any hope of a number one seed, falling to Utah State in the Mountain West title game on Saturday after a three pointer with less than three seconds to go. While not a bad loss, the lack of quality wins for San Diego State will likely be their undoing. Malachi Flynn had a poor game, making just six of his 20 shot attempts as the Aztecs shot just 34% from the floor.

9. Villanova (24-7)

The Wildcats secured a share of the Big East regular season crown, winning seven of their last eight after a one-point win at Georgetown. They led the game 26-9 in the first half, before falling apart and having to secure the win late. That said, they’re playing as well as anybody right now, and they are hitting threes at the right time of the season. A lack of depth could be their downfall, however, as they have only gotten four points from reserves in their last two games.

10. Kentucky (25-6)

Ashton Hagans “stepped away” from the team before the game against Florida on Saturday, although all signs point to a suspension by John Calipari. The Wildcats fell behind by 18 on the road and looked defeated, but Nick Richards took over and carried them to a one-point win. He scored 17 points after the break and looked like the player he was in the first half of conference play, as the Wildcats overcame the loss of Immanuel Quickley when he fouled out with eight minutes to go.
