3 players with the most to gain in the CFP National Championship

The College Football Playoff National Championship is upon us, and as one might expect when the two best teams in the country face off, the field will be littered with tremendous talent. All-Americans and future NFL professionals reside on each roster. Let’s take a look at the three players who have the most to gain from an outstanding performance.

Joe Burrow

The LSU quarterback has already won the Heisman Trophy, and likely cemented himself as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, but Burrow can reasonably make a case for the the greatest season of all time if he plays well and LSU wins.

Burrow has put together one of the best statistical seasons of all time and was rewarded with the Heisman, but that final piece of hardware defines success in football, especially for a quarterback.

A.J. Terrell

The Clemson cornerback is one of the elite cornerbacks and defensive prospects in college football this year. He is a potential top 15 draft pick, but given the quality of his play, he has received relatively little national fanfare and attention.

A.J. Terrell puts some really great tape out there.

This is how you use your length to bully guys off the route and completely control the leverage and catch point. Love his precise stabs. Good job to high point this ball for the INT too, showing off ball skills.

He proved in the CFP semifinal, against an Ohio State roster filled with NFL talent, that he is more than capable of elevating his game and being a technically sound, lockdown corner against the best in the game. Against LSU’s top-rated passing attack, Terrell will again be called upon to shut down star players, and if he succeeds it could go a long way to improve his draft prospects.

Michael Divinity

The former five-star high school recruit came into LSU with high expectations, and after a successful junior campaign, even considered declaring for the NFL Draft. Talent evaluators from the NFL know that he is still a bit unpolished, but the raw physical ability is there, and at 6-foot-2, 238 pounds, he has prototypical size.

Divinity was suspended for the last six games for a violation of the LSU athletic department's policy on marijuana use, but has been cleared to return to the team and compete in the national championship game. While character issues will play a large factor in Divinity’s evaluation on draft day, this will be the final and biggest stage on which he can show he has the talent to play at the next level.
