Who will Floyd Mayweather fight next?

For better or worse, Floyd “Money” Mayweather has announced he will be returning to active competition in 2020. As the world awaits the decision of one of its most divisive and successful athletes, let's take a look at Mayweather’s potential foils, with opponents ranging from formidable to profitable.

Danny Garcia

Danny Garcia has been linked to Mayweather in the past and is still a top welterweight. Though Garcia took narrow defeats to Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter, there are few fighters outside of the very best who would beat him with ease.

Conventional wisdom dictates that a younger Mayweather would pick apart Garcia’s methodical style, but two years away from the ring adds a level of intrigue that didn’t exist before. Though the boxing world would be aghast if Mayweather gives a chronic overachiever like Garcia a chance at a huge payday, it would translate to the biggest event of the year.

Errol Spence

When Errol Spence nearly killed himself in a drunk driving incident a few months back, many speculated his injuries were more severe than reported, though he returned to the ring. Mayweather wouldn’t take a fight with Spence if he wasn’t certain Spence is 100% after such serious injuries. Mayweather defeating Spence would send shockwaves through the sport, but if Mayweather guesses wrong and Spence is up to the task, it could result in a comeback gone horribly wrong.

Manny Pacquiao

The whole reason Manny Pacquiao has stuck around this long is that he believes he can lure Mayweather back for a rematch of their 2015 bout. Although it was a dreadful fight, Mayweather-Pacquiao II would be another huge night for the sport and a big payday for the competitors. Though Mayweather has downplayed this rematch in the past, the possibility of another $100 million payday against an opponent he so easily defeated the first time around is not lost on him.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

A freak-show fight along the lines of his match with Conor McGregor would suit Mayweather’s financial requirements and his seriousness to actively compete, and a match between the undefeated Mayweather and undefeated MMA fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov sells itself.

Even though he has been out of the ring for more than two years, Mayweather would destroy Nurmagomedov in a straight boxing match with minimal training time. It would hit all the marks for Mayweather, as it would be an easy fight with the biggest possible payday, so don’t be surprised if Mayweather and Nurmagomedov see each other in a boxing ring.
