Carolina Panthers Team History
In 1987 a former wide receiver for the Baltimore Colts and co-founder of the restaurant chain Hardee’s made a bid for the next NFL expansion franchise in the Charlotte, North Carolina. In the beginning of the franchise they were a part of the NFC West division and were led by former Steelers Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers. Their inaugural record of 7-9 went down as the best performance from an expansion team’s initial season, and in their second season they won their division with a record of 12-4. After losing to the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game of their second season, the Panthers took a bit of a slide over the course of the next couple seasons. After going 7-9 in 1997 and 4-12 in 1998, the Panthers dismissed their coach. In following seasons they managed an 8-8 record, then fell to 1-15 leading to yet another fired coach.
The Carolina Panthers made their first Super Bowl appearance in 2003 after going 11-5. They clashed with the New England Patriots in what was considered by some to be the greatest Super Bowl of all time. Super Bowl XXXVIII ended 39-32 and the Lombardi trophy made its way to New England. The 2004 campaign brought a 1-7 start to the season but the team ended one win shy of a playoff berth. The seasons of the late 2000s for the Panthers were full of ups and downs with no definitive direction or success for the franchise.
In 2010 the Ron Rivera era began and the team brought in Cam Newton from Auburn with the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. The team took advantage of a weak NFC South division in 2014 winning their division with a 7-8-1 record. The 2015 season gave Charlotte its first Super Bowl appearance since 2003 where they lost to the Denver Broncos 24-10 to end a 15-1 regular season. The team is still seeking that deep playoff run as they continue to build on their upward trajectory.
Ownership changed hands when David Tepper acquired the team from Jerry Richardson in the summer of 2018. Coming off an 11-5 SU and 9-7 ATS season, the team seems poised to remain competitive this year with new ownership at the helm.
