Cleveland Browns Team History
Paul Brown, the Cleveland Browns’ namesake, became the coach of the AAFC (All-American Football Conference) expansion franchise in 1944 when the team was acquired by Arthur McBride. For four straight years between 1946 and 1949 the Cleveland Browns won the AAFC championship before the league dissolved. At this time the Browns moved to the NFL and continued to have success, winning the NFL championship in 1950, 1954, 1955, and 1964. The team became a part of the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 and found itself in the playoffs in 1971 and 1972 but fell to mediocrity throughout the rest of the decade. They won their AFC division in 1980, 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1989 but failed to reach the Super Bowl in any of these years.
In 1995, an announcement was made that the Cleveland Browns were moving to Baltimore. However, a deal was struck with the city and the team’s colors, logo, history, and legacy were to remain in Cleveland while the ownership group took their stake elsewhere. In 1996 the Browns shut down operation to build a new stadium. Between the divisional success in the late 1980s and scattered playoff appearances in 1994 and 2002, the Browns have not been a franchise with much success in the National Football League.
The team’s records and success lie in the early days of the team and are sustained by the legacies of Jim Brown, Joe Thomas, Don Shula, and Ozzie Newsome. Many branches from the organization have led to success, however, including former coach Bill Belichick who was fired in 1995 after five years with the organization. The Browns just haven’t been a franchise that has been able to turn the corner on mediocrity outside of a couple spikes including their 2002 playoff appearance. With fairly recent coaching changes and a plethora of first round selections on the roster, the Browns are as close as they’ve been in a long time to being a somewhat competitive franchise again.
Cleveland posted a gruesome 0-16 SU and 4-12 ATS season that led them to select Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft. They became just the fifth team in history to go winless through an entire season. As they say, there's nowhere to go but up for these Cleveland Browns.
