Mahomes favored to win Super Bowl MVP

The matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers is set, and the updated Super Bowl MVP odds are available.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes remains the favorite to be named Super Bowl MVP. Mahomes has been sensational in the playoffs, but he’s only narrowly favored over 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Chiefs offense has looked unstoppable

After so many years of disappointment and heartbreak, the Chiefs are off to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1969. With Mahomes at quarterback the sky is the limit for this franchise.

The Kansas City passing game has been a sight to behold through two playoff games, and Mahomes has completed 46 of his passes on 70 attempts for 615 yards and eight touchdowns. He has also added more than 100 yards on the ground, including a momentum-swinging touchdown run against Tennessee.

The Titans were able to slow down the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens, but they couldn’t contain the Chiefs.

The Chiefs offense has looked nearly unstoppable—once it eventually shrugged off slow starts in each of the last two games.

Will that offensive output continue against the 49ers? Bettors are confident, so far, that will be the case.

The Chiefs opened as the narrow favorite over San Francisco, which boasts a frightening defense, with a front seven that has become the envy of the NFL.

That’s a large obstacle standing in the way of Mahomes and Super Bowl MVP. But nothing has fazed him so far.

Could Garoppolo win MVP for just handing the ball off?

Garoppolo entered the NFC Championship Game with the second-best Super Bowl MVP odds, so we shouldn’t be surprised he has retained that spot.

But let’s examine his work in his first postseason as a starter.

Garoppolo has completed 17 passes through two playoff games for 208 yards. Against Green Bay on Sunday, he attempted only eight passes—eight!—and completed six for 77 yards.

Quarterbacks have a distinct advantage when it comes to getting the Super Bowl MVP nod.

In the last 15 Super Bowls, quarterbacks have been named MVP nine times. Even if the 49ers win, it’s hard—at least based on his work in these playoffs—to imagine Garoppolo will throw enough to win the award, unless there is a sizable shift in the 49ers offensive scheme.

Will a running back reclaim Super Bowl MVP?

Terrell Davis was the last running back to win Super Bowl MVP, back in 1998. Derrick Henry’s play this postseason with the Titans garnered some interest in this market last week, but Tennessee is done.

San Francisco is not. And that brings us to Raheem Mostert.

The 27-year-old running back shredded the Green Bay Packers defense in the NFC Championship Game, with 220 yards and four touchdowns.

"I've been on seven different teams ... before every game I look at the cut dates."

His odds to win Super Bowl MVP are +500 at BetAmerica. The 49ers offense had a three-headed monster for a run game, but Mostert appears to have emerged as "the guy" in the backfield. Tevin Coleman suffered what appeared to be an arm injury against Green Bay, which sets up Mostert to take the bulk of the snaps against the Chiefs.

If Mostert pulls off a Super Bowl performance that is even close to what he did against Green Bay, he’ll put himself in contention for MVP honors.

Looking beyond the favorites for MVP

Keen on making some low-risk, high-reward moves within the Super Bowl MVP market?

Keep an eye on Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (+2000), Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill (+3000), and 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa (+4000).
