Philadelphia Eagles Team History
In July of 1933, the Philadelphia Eagles were born from the ashes of the bankrupt Frankford Yellow Jackets football franchise. A syndicate led by Bert Bell and Lud Wray stepped in, paying a total of $14,500 for the Yellow Jackets, bailing them out of debt. As a result, Bell and Wray were awarded the rights to an NFL expansion franchise which became the Philadelphia Eagles. As of 2017, the Philadelphia Eagles rank as the tenth most valuable franchise in the NFL worth $2.65 billion.
Late 1940 was a pivotal time for the Eagles franchise. Steelers owner Art Rooney sold his interest in the Steelers franchise to Alexis Thompson and reinvested half of the money into the Eagles. Although Thompson now owned the Steelers, he wanted to move the franchise closer to his home in Boston. As a result, he traded the Steelers to Bell and Rooney in exchange for the Eagles. Soon after, due to labor shortages during World War II, the Steelers and Eagles combined franchises becoming the “Steagles.” The merger only lasted one season, but marked an important time in Pennsylvania football.
The early Eagles teams struggled, as expansion franchises often do, managing only twenty-three wins over a ten-year period. By 1947 the Eagles would turn things around, making their first of three consecutive NFL Championship appearances. In 1948 the franchise won its first NFL Championship behind Eagles legends Steve Van Buren and Pete Pihos. The Eagles repeated as champions in 1949 as Van Buren won his third consecutive NFL rushing title. In 1960 future Hall of Famers Norm Van Brocklin and Chuck Bednarik led the franchise to their third NFL Championship with a victory over the Green Bay Packers.
Current owner Jeffrey Lurie purchased the Eagles from Norman Braman for an estimated $185 million in 1994. The Eagles have been on a steady incline since Lurie purchased the franchise, making the playoffs 17 times and appearing in Super Bowl twice. In 2016 the Eagles hired former defensive corodinator Doug Pederson after parting ways with previous head coach Chip Kelly. Pederson began making changes during his first, full offseason which paid dividends immediately. After an historic 13-3 SU regular season and a league best 13-6-0 ATS record, the Eagles defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII to win the franchise’s first Super Bowl. Backup quarterback Nick Foles, who had been inserted in to the starting role after second-year sensation Carson Wentz, took home the MVP award.
The 2018 Eagles walk in to the upcoming season with concerns surrounding Wentz's injury, but remain confident that Foles can get keep the throne warm. After all, he did the job in the Super Bowl when it mattered most.
