The best Super Bowl quotes of all time

The Super Bowl is a high-pressure situation, so it’s no surprise players and coaches are on edge in the week ahead of the game. Some are trying to get into their heads of their opponents, some are under so much stress they snap, and others are just a little wild.

Whatever the reason, it provides us with some moments of magic and madness, as we build the hype toward Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles. Here are some of the best quotes from over the years.

"Haha, no. He's out doing his doggie dog thing, living in his doggie dog world. You feel me?" - Marshawn Lynch

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, ahead of Super Bowl XLVIII, when he was asked if his dog watches his games. Hopefully his pooch didn’t miss this one, as the Seahawks hammered the Broncos, 43-8, and Lynch found the end zone.

"Don’t kiss Julie Brown." - Jimmy Johnson

MTV presenter "Downtown" Julie Brown was rooting for the Dallas Cowboys ahead of Super Bowl XXVII, and claimed that they had all the young guys who would recognize her from the TV.

Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson quickly shot Brown down when asked if he had any team rules in the run-up to the game.

“I’d run over my mother to win the Super Bowl.” - Russ Grimm

Russ Grimm made it pretty clear how much he and his Washington team wanted to win Super Bowl XVIII, in 1984, against the Raiders.

Unfortunately for Russ’ mother, the Raiders won convincingly, 38-9. We can only hope Mrs. Grimm avoided getting run over by her son.

"Jesus was healing the sick, and the doctors got mad. He was raising the dead, and all the funeral home directors got mad." - Reggie White

Packers defensive end Reggie White was not only a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, but he was also an ordained preacher.

Ahead of Super Bowl XXXI, he flexed his biblical knowledge with one of the stranger religious quotes.

White recorded a record three sacks, as the Packers defeated the New England Patriots, 35-21.

"That’s an ugly dude. You can’t tell me he doesn’t look like Mr. Ed." - Ray Buchanan

Falcons defensive back Ray Buchanan took a shot at Shannon Sharpe ahead of Super Bowl XXXIII, when he compared the Broncos tight end to the famous television talking horse, Mr Ed.

Sharpe had the last laugh, as Denver won, 34-19.

"Is he my friend? No. Did I ever view him as a friend? No. Did I view him as an acquaintance? No. Do I like him? No. If I see him in a snowstorm, his truck is broken down, mine’s working, would I pick him up? No." - Shannon Sharpe

Yeah, Sharpe’s comeback was awesome. Mic drop moment.

"Slim is a four-letter word. I try to get down to where I’m not gross." - Jared Lorenzen

Backup Giants quarterback Jared Lorenzen tipped the scales at 270 pounds. Known as the "Hefty Lefty," Lorenzen was asked ahead of Super Bowl XLII if he had considered losing weight.

Lorenzen had the last laugh, though, as he got his championship ring courtesy of a 17-14 win over the Patriots.

"I have the nicest nails in the league." - Richard Seymour

A bold claim from defensive end Richard Seymour, who admitted he enjoys manicures and pedicures, ahead of Super Bowl XLII.

Although he didn’t win a ring that year, he does have three to his name, so his nails have to look good for pictures, I suppose.

"That’s why I was out in the streets. To make sure no one else was." - John Matuszak

Raiders defensive lineman John Matuszak came up with the perfect excuse, for the previous night’s events, at the Media Day for Super Bowl XV. Matuszak had warned his younger teammates not to get tempted by Bourbon Street in host city New Orleans.

It didn’t do any harm, as the Raiders ran out 27-10 winners over the Eagles.

"He couldn’t spell ‘cat’ if you spotted him the ‘c’ and the ‘t'." - Thomas Henderson

Dallas linebacker Thomas Henderson didn’t hold back ahead of Super Bowl XIII, when he was asked to comment on Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw.

That may not have been the smartest move, as Bradshaw threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns, and the Steelers won, 35-31.
