5 key MLS players who could be on the move

Diego Valeri has been a key player for the Portland Timbers, but could he be heading elsewhere for next season? (Photo by Diego Diaz/Icon Sportswire)

The Major League Soccer offseason is upon us, and a ton of player movement is expected among the soon-to-be 26 teams in the league. So who are the important players you should watch this offseason to find out where they land? Let's take a look.

Diego Valeri, Portland Timbers

Diego Valeri has been the heart and soul of the Portland Timbers since he arrived in 2013, but after seven seasons, he could be on the move in 2020. Could Portland really trade its best player or could he leave MLS altogether? It would be a huge blow for the league to lose a player that has won an MLS Cup, MVP, MLS Cup MVP, MLS Newcomer of the Year and has been a three-time Best XI and four-time All-Star.

Bill Hamid, D.C. United

Bill Hamid has arguably been the best goalkeeper in MLS since he returned to D.C. United on loan from FC Midtjylland in July of 2018. D.C. United would not have been close to making the playoffs if he didn't have 14 clean sheets last year.

Ten of those came in scoreless draws or 1-0 wins, and he was at or near the top of every goalkeeping category. D.C. United will have to figure out if it wants to make his return permanent by paying for a permanent transfer.

Michael Bradley, Toronto FC

Michael Bradley lead the renaissance of Toronto FC, and helped the club reach to three MLS Cup finals (one win), a Supporters' Shield, three Canadian Championships and a CONCACAF Champions League final. If Toronto FC had won MLS Cup this year, a $6.5 million option year would have kicked in for Bradley to keep him in red. However, this offseason we will see whether Bradley moves to another club in the MLS or takes his talent overseas again. He still has some left in the tank, and he could be itching to prove that somewhere else.

Luciano Acosta, D.C. United

D.C. United has a lot of decisions to make this offseason, but none will be trickier than replacing Luciano Acosta. He had an MVP-type year last year, and he almost moved to Paris Saint-Germain in January, but a deadline-day deal failed. While his desire is to move to Europe, he has also draw interest from several MLS teams. Where will this dynamic player end up?

Hector "Tito" Villalba, Atlanta United

Tito Villalba was Atlanta United's first designated-player signing back in 2016, and three years later he could be on the move. Relegated mostly to substitute appearances because of an injury and other big-time signings, Villalba is still very young and has the ability to be the centerpiece of a lineup in MLS.

Could another team swoop in and try to pry Villalba away from the Five Stripes?
