Premier League Notebook: Defeat to Liverpool could mean the end for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Another week of Premier League action is in the bag, and we were treated to one of the highest scoring slates of the year with a whopping 40 goals across 10 games. Seventy percent of games saw Over 2.5 goals, and only three of the 20 teams failed to find the back of the net.

Seventh Heaven for Chelsea

Chelsea’s 7-0 demolition of Norwich had implications at both ends of the table as the Blues recorded their biggest win for almost a decade. Mason mount scored a hat-trick as Chelsea maintained their one-point lead at the top of the table, but for Norwich it is yet more doom and gloom.

The Canaries are bottom of the table having failed to win a game this season. They’re the lowest scorers with just two goals, and have conceded the most, shipping 23 across nine games. Daniel Farke’s side are now closing in on seven hours of football without scoring and relegation looks inevitable.

Ole Gonna Solskjaer?

Liverpool kept the pressure up on Chelsea with the result of the weekend as they beat fierce rivals Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford. Boos rang around the stadium at half-time as coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer headed for the tunnel, and the pressure has never been greater on the United boss.

He admitted in his post-match interview that it was his darkest day as coach, and that sentiment is felt across the fanbase. The stadium emptied as Liverpool made it five, and there was still 40 minutes to play.

The result leaves United four points off the top four and Ole clinging to his job.

Salah is Simply Sublime

The main man in that 5-0 thumping was Mo Salah, who scored a superb hat-trick. In doing so he has now found the net in 10 straight games for Liverpool and became the first opposition player in almost 30 years to score a hat-trick in a league game at Old Trafford.

Liverpool’s star man now has 10 league goals this year and is three clear of Jamie Vardy in the race to be this season’s top scorer. Incredibly, he has converted 25% of his shots on goal this year and the Reds have a huge 27 goals in their opening nine games.

City Remain Favorites

Despite two hugely impressive wins from Liverpool and Chelsea, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City remain favorites for the title after a 4-1 win against high-flying Brighton. A brace from Phil Foden helped put the away side 3-0 up at half-time, before the Citizens turned on cruise control for the second 45 minutes.

It was a big win for Pep as Brighton were on a five-game unbeaten run and were fancied to cause City a few problems at home. That belief was firmly vanquished inside the first half hour, and City now sit just two points off the top of the table having already played their two biggest rivals away from home.

New Owners, Same Newcastle

Excitement buzzed around St James’ Park two weeks ago as the Saudi-backed takeover of the club was complete. But for fans who thought the new owners would breathe new life into the club immediately, there has been a quick reality check.

A wonder goal from Callum Wilson rescued a point away to Crystal Palace, but this was another disastrous day for the Magpies, who sacked coach Steve Bruce earlier this week.

They have failed to win a game this season, picking up just four points from a possible 27, and now face a clash with league-leaders Chelsea next week. The future isn’t rosy for Newcastle fans, despite the possible cash injection.
