Tottenham vs. Wolves: Premier League betting odds, preview, and pick

Sunday afternoon will see the seventh team in the Premier League table square off with the eighth, as Tottenham Hotspur plays host to Wolverhampton Wolves.

Let's dig into the match, beginning with the latest betting odds available.

Tottenham’s defense is leaking goals

Following the "new manager bump" that saw them go nine unbeaten, Antonio Conte’s men have lost two straight in the Premier League. The latter was a 3-2 shock defeat to Southampton on Wednesday, in which the visitors twice overturned a one-goal deficit and scored goals in the 80th and 82nd minute to claim victory. Spurs thought they had equalized late, but Steven Bergwijn was denied another heroic moment by the offside flag.

Spurs previously lost in the league against Chelsea, a 2-0 defeat that now sees them having conceded five goals in their last two in league play. More troubling, Southampton dominated the chances, outshooting Spurs 23-8 and putting 10 efforts on target compared to just two for the hosts. Hugo Lloris was forced into six saves to keep his side in the match.

The absence of Eric Dier is a key concern for Spurs in defense, with their leaky issues arising since his departure with a thigh issue. In the three Premier League matches since he was injured, Spurs have conceded seven goals. Conte announced Friday that Dier will be out again on Sunday, while fellow defender Japhet Tanganga is also out after injuring his knee against Chelsea.

Conte did say that, despite their recent heavy workload, neither Son Heung-min nor Christian Romero would be rested and both will start against Wolves. Additionally, new signings Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur could be handed their first starts, following their debuts off the bench against Southampton.

Wolves have been strong away from home

For the first time since Oct. 16 of last year, Bruno Lage’s side saw their defenses breached before halftime of a Premier League fixture. Having not conceded a first half goal in 14 consecutive league matches, Wolves allowed Arsenal to score in controversial fashion just 25 minutes in. Wolves keeper Jose Sa went to catch a headed effort inside the six yard area, and had his hands kicked by Alexandre Lacazette. The ball skipped to a wide open Gabriel, and the defender turned it in.

Wolves have finally conceded in the first-half of a Premier League game!

Arsenal were reduced to 10 men with just over 20 minutes remaining, but Wolves were unable to capitalize in the 1-0 defeat. This was despite outshooting Arsenal 15-12, with their four efforts on target being twice what Arsenal manufactured. It ended their five match unbeaten run at home, and ended a three-match winning streak.

Wolves now look to continue their strong form away from Molineaux, having won three straight away from home and having won six of their 11 road matches this season with two draws. They have also kept five clean sheets on away ground, as their defense has been near unbreakable at times this season.

Joao Moutinho missed the match mid-week against Arsenal, and is questionable for Sunday’s tilt. However, both Hwang Hee-Chan and Jonny made the bench and should be available, and defensive stalwart Romain Saiss returned from AFCON to start against the Gunners.

Tottenham vs. Wolves Betting Trends

  • Tottenham have won the last three meetings between these teams in all competitions, winning the last two via clean sheet
  • Spurs have also won four of the last six meetings in all competitions, with one draw and one defeat
  • Eight of Spurs’ last nine home Premier League matches have seen at least three goals scored
  • Spurs have found the net at least twice in each of their last six matches at home in league play
  • Six of Wolves’ last eight matches have seen two or fewer goals scored

Expect Wolves to take a result

Spurs are struggling at the back right now, and as such they are allowing more chances. That is helpful for a Wolves side that has left plenty to be desired in attack this season. However, the return of Raul Jimenez has been a breath of fresh air for them, and he arguably should have scored on a header Thursday against Arsenal, but hit it directly at the keeper.

Spurs have lost three of their 11 home matches this season, and Wolves are no stranger to defeating them away from home, having won three of their last six away trips to Tottenham. In fact, Wolves are one of just four clubs in history to have secured wins over Spurs at the new Tottenham Stadium, Wembley Stadium, and White Hart Lane.

Given their stellar form away from home this campaign, combined with Tottenham’s sieve-like defense without Dier, I like Wolves to take a result from this match. Combine it with a low-scoring match total for a solid Same Game Combo play, as the 1.6 average goals scored in Wolves’ fixtures is by far the lowest in the Premier League.

Score prediction: Tottenham 2-2 Wolves

Premier League PICK: WOLVES DOUBLE CHANCE (+128)
