3 can’t-miss MLB win totals for 2020

Win totals for all 30 MLB clubs have been posted at BetAmerica, and they present intriguing wagering opportunities for bettors willing to put in the time and effort. Or you can take a shortcut and invest in these three sides below.

Toronto Blue Jays (74.5)

The Blue Jays, who went 67-95 in 2019, are a candidate for most-improved team in 2020, thanks to some blooming prospects and savvy offseason moves.

Third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. nearly won the Home Run Derby in his rookie year and slashed .272/.339/.433 over 514 plate appearances. Rookie second baseman Cavan Biggio knocked 16 homers and drove in 48 RBIs in his initial campaign for Toronto (430 plate appearances). This pair, along with offseason addition Travis Shaw (.778 career OPS) at first base, should lead a potent offense north of the border.

The Blue Jays’ starters were 22nd in ERA last season (5.25), but they made huge strides to correct that, with the signing of Hyun-Jin Ryu (14-5, 2.32 ERA in 2019) on a four-year, $80 million contract. General manager Ross Atkins also signed Tanner Roark (3.71 career ERA) and swapped a minor-league prospect for Milwaukee’s Chase Anderson (1.261 career WHIP). Pitcher Nate Pearson, Toronto’s No. 1 prospect, is expected to make his MLB debut at some point in 2020, as well. The Toronto bullpen could still be a weakness, and the lineup is a little thin, but the Blue Jays could push .500 this year.

Minnesota Twins (90.5)

The Minnesota Twins exceeded expectations in 2019, when they went 101-61 and won the AL Central for the first time in a decade. Despite that overwhelming success (a three-game sweep courtesy of the Yankees in the American League Division Series notwithstanding) and a solid offseason, oddsmakers have set the bar rather low for the Twins in 2020.

Minnesota wisely brought back Jake Odorizzi (15-7, 3.51 ERA last season) to co-anchor its rotation with José Berríos (14-8, 3.68 ERA last season). Veteran starters Rich Hill and Homer Bailey were added as depth options, to go with promising sophomores Devin Smeltzer and Randy Dobnak. Relievers not named Taylor Rogers were shaky for the Twins in 2019, but the addition of Sergio Romo and Tyler Clippard should help shore up the bullpen.

The biggest splash Minnesota made this winter was the signing of third baseman Josh Donaldson (37 home runs, 94 RBIs in 2019) to a four-year, $92 million contract. The rich got richer, as the Twins led in the majors in homers and were second in runs a year ago. There’s plenty to like about this club, so Over bettors should take advantage of this relatively low win total.

Los Angeles Angels (85.5)

There is reason for optimism in Anaheim, even though the Angels went 72-90 last season. Third baseman Anthony Rendon was lured away from the Washington Nationals with a seven-year, $245 million deal, and will join a lineup that features all-time talent Mike Trout, breakout star Tommy La Stella (.295, 16 home runs and 44 RBIs in just 80 games), and the exciting Shohei Ohtani, who is also poised to rejoin the Angels rotation. However, oddsmakers may be going overboard with this total.

Interesting story this morning- Shohei Ohtani could potentially play a minor league rehab assignment one night as a pitcher, and the next night hit for the Angels, he’d be the first to rehab this way pic.twitter.com/SVMNPmWgdf

The Angels still have massive rotation problems, even after the signing of Julio Teheran and a trade for Dylan Bundy. They were 29th in starter ERA in 2019 and often eschewed using conventional starters in favor of “openers” for parts of last season. Their overtaxed relief corps also didn’t fare well a year ago (20th in ERA). We’ll see how creative new manager Joe Maddon can be in 2020.

The Angels still have some catching up to do with Houston and Oakland, and the Texas Rangers could be on the rise, following a productive offseason that saw them lure Corey Kluber. A 14-win improvement for the Angels seems far-fetched.
