Angels broadcaster Mark Gubicza pinpoints L.A.’s most pressing offseason need

The 2020 MLB Postseason is well underway, and for the sixth year in a row the Los Angeles Angels are watching the action from home.

L.A. finished the season with a dismal 26-34 record and 10 games behind the division-leading Oakland Athletics in the AL West. It was a disappointing result for a team that entered the year with high hopes after acquiring World Series hero Anthony Rendon and two-time All-Star Julio Teheran.

BetAmerica ambassador Glendon Rusch recently sat down with Angels color analyst Mark Gubicza to discuss L.A.’s most pressing offseason needs.

"The Angels have some good pieces, but they need to bring in an ace - or two - for their starting staff, and another arm or two for the bullpen," Gubicza said. "You need to have that guy that you can pencil in as an automatic 'W.'"

The Halos’ lack of quality starters put a tremendous strain on the team’s relievers, who finished fifth in the American League in innings pitched.

"If you’re on high alert every single game in the bullpen, it’s difficult for bullpen arms to be successful," Gubicza observed.

The Angels do not have a general manager at the moment after firing Billy Eppler following five losing seasons, but Gubicza sees that as a positive.

"If you’re a GM coming from the outside, you’re not married to your farm system," he noted. "When you draft those kids, they’re your babies, but if you come from the outside looking in, you can use those prospects right now to make this team win. I think that’s what their thought process will be going forward."

Angels president John Carpino has said the franchise will be methodical in its search for a new GM, with the intention of having someone in place by Thanksgiving.
