MLB Wednesday preview: Blue Jays at Rays, Mets at Dodgers

The surging Rays are a confident play against the blundering Blue Jays on Wednesday night.

Defending AL Cy Young winner Blake Snell takes the hill for Tampa, and he one-hit Toronto through six shutout innings (nine strikeouts, one walk) when he last faced them April 13. Dating back to 2016, Snell is 18-8 in 34 starts at Tropicana Field, with a 2.40 ERA and an opponent batting average of .206. The Blue Jays have dropped six of their last seven and are 2-5 on the runline in that span.

Rookie Trent Thornton starts for Toronto, and he was shelled for five runs on eight hits, including three home runs, in his lone start against the Rays on April 12. Outfielder Austin Meadows, who owns a 1.156 OPS in May, took Thornton deep twice that day. Look for Tampa to notch their seventh win in eight games in dominant fashion.

New York Mets (27-27) at Los Angeles Dodgers (36-19), 10:10 p.m. ET

The Mets and Dodgers have exceeded the total in their first two meetings this week, and it looks like the trend will continue Wednesday night.

Noah Syndergaard will be on the mound for New York, and aside from the occasional flash of brilliance, he's had a poor 2019. His ERA against teams at .500 or better this year is 7.03, and his WHIP is 1.739. Dodgers right fielder and NL MVP frontrunner Cody Bellinger is probably salivating over this matchup.

Walker Buehler has a sparkling 1.73 ERA in May (four starts), but the Mets' bats have been on a roll since a disastrous weekend series with the Marlins, plating 52 runs in their last nine contests. Third baseman Todd Frazier has caught fire since cratering at a .143 average May 10, and has hit .340 in his last 47 at-bats.
