It is tough to win in the NFL. Emerging as division champions is the first step each team takes on its quest to make the playoffs and ultimately win a Super Bowl. The NFC West is perhaps the most uncertain division in the league as it undergoes a time of transition.
Last year is in the rearview mirror, and each team has hope to make the playoffs, win the NFC West, and make the Super Bowl. Taking roster additions and injuries into the equation, who has the best odds to win the NFC West?
NFC West Division Winner Odds
The NFC West division may be the most underrated in the NFL. Though no team in the division gets the love of AFC contenders, each team has a potentially realistic chance to win the division and make the playoffs. Let’s take a look at the odds of each team to win the NFC West.
San Francisco 49ers (
)The San Francisco 49ers are interesting for a lot of reasons. Though dynamic receiver Deebo Samuel and a few other key pieces are out the door, San Francisco remains a contender thanks to one of the best rosters in the league.
What the 49ers Do Well
The odds are tight between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The 49ers have an edge offensively thanks to running back Christian McCaffrey. When he is healthy and in the lineup, San Francisco can dominate teams on the ground.
Defensively, San Francisco has an elite unit (again, when healthy). With Nick Bosa and Fred Warner leading the way, they have the ability to shut down any team any given week. The secondary is a little thin, but the team is excellently coached.
Where the 49ers Struggle
San Francisco was the NFL's poster child for injuries last season. Though they are a far cry from the also-rans in the NFL like the New York Giants, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans, and New England Patriots, injuries drastically impact their odds to win it all.
San Francisco is arguably the most complete team in the NFL when healthy. That remains the biggest challenge for now, though the AFC Champion Chiefs managed to exploit their secondary in previous Super Bowl matchups.
Los Angeles Rams (
)The Los Angeles Rams have been contenders over the past few seasons and are a safe bet to be one of the best in the NFL again. Their odds are very close to the San Francisco 49ers in what should be one of the tightest divisions in sports.
Head Coach Sean McVay is one of the best coaches in sports and has the Rams ready every year. This team consistently finds a way to win and stay competitive in the division, even when everyone is counting them out. You can never fade the Rams so long as McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford are at the helm.
What the Rams Do Well
The Los Angeles Rams can throw the ball with any team in the division. As a matter of fact, they can throw with anyone in the AFC or the NFL. Stafford remains an elite quarterback and now has Davante Adams to throw to in addition to the dynamic Puka Nacua.
On the defensive side of things, the Rams continue to be one of the most underrated units in the NFL. San Francisco gets love for its defense, but the Rams' defense may actually be the best in the division. This team, thanks to its balanced offense and defense, has great odds for success.
Where the Rams Struggle
The biggest issue for the Rams in recent seasons is staying healthy. It is a safe bet that Stafford will struggle with injuries along the way. This is a well-coached team, but their odds will drop if he and other important players can’t stay on the field.
Past that, the Rams have everything that it takes to win this division. Their opening odds are in lockstep with San Francisco for a reason. If the Los Angeles Rams can remain healthy, they should not only be popular picks to win the division but will have comparable odds to major contenders like the Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, Cincinnati Bengals, Philadelphia Eagles, and Buffalo Bills.
Arizona Cardinals (
)The Arizona Cardinals are arguably the most interesting team not only in the NFC West, but the NFL as a whole. Their opening odds have them in the mix to win the division this year, especially with a softer schedule and following one of their most promising seasons in years.
Leading the way for the Cardinals is quarterback Kyler Murray. The discourse around him is one of the most divisive in sports. Some feel that he has the potential to take the Cardinals to big things. The rest think that the Cardinals are lost and that they are subject to major disappointment.
What the Cardinals Do Well
The Cardinals have the potential to have the best offense in the division. The team is rife with talent and will be a major key if they want to win each week. Their odds show that they are capable of beating any team at any time across their schedule.
In addition to Murray, pass catchers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Trey McBride have the potential to be one of the best at their respective positions. Harrison Jr. is expected to have one of the big breakout seasons in the NFL, at a minimum, becoming the primary target for Murray. If he can, the Cardinals could be an underrated bet to win the division.
Where the Cardinals Struggle
The Arizona Cardinals have struggled to get to the quarterback in recent seasons. They made moves to improve their hope of having a strong pass rush, showing arguably the most improved defense of any team in the division. That said, they still have a long way to go to catch up with the rest of the NFC West division in that regard.
Aside from their defense, the Arizona Cardinals struggle with youth and inexperience. They have a talented foundation in place, but are a long way off from being on the same level as the Bills, Eagles, Chiefs, Ravens, or another team expected to be dominant in the NFL this year. They will need to grow up quickly if they hope to continue improving their latest odds and have one of their best seasons in ages.
Seattle Seahawks (
)Finding consistency in sports, not just the NFL, is hard to find. The Seattle Seahawks are attempting to essentially rebuild without having to pay the price of being one of the worst teams in the league. They lost big names like DK Metcalf this offseason, which drastically impacts their odds.
With Metcalf off to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC, the Seattle Seahawks will depend on the arrival of Sam Darnold. His play last season with Minnesota was revelatory, seeing him ascend to a high-end starter for the first time. Can he impact the Seahawks’ opening odds and take them to a big year?
What the Seahawks Do Well
The Seattle Seahawks have a potentially strong quarterback at the helm for the first time since Russell Wilson was hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. With respect to Geno Smith, management believes Darnold can take a good offense and make it great. When he is on, he can elevate his team. When he is not, he throws picks galore and collapses in a big game.
Another aspect in which the Seattle Seahawks thrive is running the ball. When Kenneth Walker III is healthy, the team has hopes of beating anyone. When he’s out, the offense looked lost at times last year. If Walker is healthy and Darnold is as advertised, the Seattle Seahawks offense should be interesting in a tough division.
Where the Seahawks Struggle
Who is going to catch the ball this year? Receiver talent is robust in the NFC West, and the Seattle Seahawks may have the thinnest group in the division. Jaxon Smith-Njigba has emerged as a star but will be leading a thin group into the opening week.
While their run defense is one of the best in the division, the pass defense is interesting, to say the least. After deciding to hold in the offseason, their odds have taken a hit. In a division with strong quarterbacks, it is a safe bet that the Seahawks are going to struggle with the NFC West schedule this year.
Who Will Win the NFC West?
Much like the NFC South, it is anyone’s guess as to who is the best bet to win the NFC West division title. San Francisco has Super Bowl talent, but injuries have ravaged the roster in the past. The Los Angeles Rams continue to retool during the offseason, and their defense is as nasty as any. The Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks are the wild cards. The Seahawks lost a lot of talent but remain an interesting bet.
