PGA Masters: Tiger a Stroke Off Heading into Saturday

The 2019 Masters Tournament heads into weekend play with some familiar names at the top. No name near the top is as familiar as Tiger Woods. Check out a recap of what happened in the first couple of rounds of the Masters!

Tiger Looks for Major Number 15

Although a security guard tripped Tiger up after his tee shot on the 14th, it didn’t bother him in the least. Tiger, grimacing, simply walked to the green and nailed a birdie. That was the sort of day Tiger had.

On one hand, you’d think he’d have played terribly. After all, in addition to the security guard incident, Woods also had to wait for a rain delay to end. But even with the issues, Tiger played golf better than he has in a long time.

He’ll enter Saturday looking for Major number 15. Tiger could play his way into the final group on Sunday sitting only a stroke off Francesco Molinari, Jason Day, Brooks Koepka, Adam Scott, and Louis Oosthuizen, who are all at -7.

Tiger Woods , at Augusta, only a stroke off with 2 rounds to play? Sounds like we’re setting up for a storybook ending.

International Players Atop the Masters Leader Board

Only a single American player got to -7 after the first two rounds. Brooks Koepka shot a terrific 66, -6 in Round 1. In Round 2, he shot a -1, 71. That put Brooks into a tie with the lead.

Outside of Koepka, though, international flair dots the top of the leader-board. Francesco Molinari is Italian, Jason Day is Australian, and Louis Oosthuizen is South African. Like Day, Adam Scott is Australian.

3-of-4 players at -6, Woods, Dustin Johnson, and Xander Schauffele, are American, but at the top, the international players rocked Augusta National on Thursday and Friday.

Lefty and Rickie Aren’t Out of It

Rickie Fowler, one of the favorites entering the week, isn’t too far off. He’s at -3 after shooting a 70 on Thursday and a 71 on Friday. Fowler could get hot on Saturday and then carry that over to Sunday. It’s too early to give up on Rickie.

Phil “Lefty” Mickelson heads into Saturday only 3 strokes off. He’s at -4. Even though Phil shot a 73 on Friday, that came after a fantastic 67 in Round 1. If Mickelson can get back on track on Saturday, who knows? We could be looking at a Lefty-Tiger final pairing on April 14.

Rory and Bubba Have Some Work to Do

Rory McIlroy, the less than +1000 chalk to win the 2019 Masters Tournament, has played par golf after two rounds. Rory’s 7 strokes behind. He must hope for some luck. Either that, or come up with one of those awe-inspiring rounds of golf where he shoots a 63.

Like McIlroy, Bubba’s got a lot of work to do to get back into contention. The 2012 and 2014 Masters winner is also 7 strokes off the leaders. Watson can shoot lights out. Even if he does, he’s got to hope none of the leaders maintain their hot play.

Two rounds down and two to go in the 2019 Masters Tournament! Get the popcorn ready, turn on the television, sit back and watch if the great Tiger Woods can secure his  elusive fifteenth major tournament championship!
