The NFL is a tough league to win games in. Capturing a division title is even tougher, especially with historic franchises like the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, and Minnesota Vikings vying to win the NFC North.
As each team battles on another week, who will emerge to win the division title? Other potential contenders like the Ravens, Eagles, and Rams have tough sledding, but there is no tougher bet in the league than trying to guess who will win the NFC North.
NFC North Division Winner Odds
Who has the best odds to win the division? Who are the favorites to not only win a lot of games but make a run to the Super Bowl? Let’s check out the odds of each team and see which team to bet on for those interested in legal sports betting.
Green Bay Packers (
)The Green Bay Packers were considered a decent bet this season until just before the year began. After trading for Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys, they have become the odds-on favorites for the first time in a few years.
Their odds to win the division were already solid, but they have suddenly become one of the best teams in the league in terms of Super Bowl odds. The Green Bay Packers are as solid a bet as anyone to win the division for the first time since 2021.
What the Packers Do Well
The face of the Green Bay Packers, quarterback Jordan Love, will lead the charge. Entering this year, many expect Love and the Green Bay Packers to take a step forward and play at a higher level. The offense is certainly a strength for a team that will start the season as favorites to win the NFC North.
Perhaps the biggest reason for optimism behind the Green Bay Packers is the acquisition of Parsons. A rarity in sports, Parsons has the ability to wreck a play or a game at any time. His arrival makes the Green Bay Packers the best bet to back and perhaps one of the top favorites in the NFL.
Where the Packers Struggle
Though Parsons negates what is perhaps their biggest weakness, there has been a regression in the secondary. They lost Jaire Alexander, one of the top defensive backs in the league, to the Baltimore Ravens in the offseason.
The bet is that the Packers can play more aggressively and get to the quarterback. Teams that can limit the number of pressures they face can challenge the Packers late in games because they don’t have a shutdown corner. If they can resolve this issue, the Green Bay Packers will no doubt be the best bet to win the NFC North.
Minnesota Vikings (
)There is uncertainty to start the year despite a 14-3 record for the Minnesota Vikings. Even with one of the best offensive lines in the game, rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy still needs to show that he is worth the 10th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Minnesota Vikings lost to the Detroit Lions in the final game of the season before suffering a bitter disappointment in the NFC Wild Card round. There is no doubt that most props will be low for McCarthy, given the uncertainty about what he can do, a challenge Minnesota must overcome.
What the Vikings Do Well
What makes Minnesota a strong bet to win the division is head coach Kevin O’Connell. Regardless of props and other lines, Minnesota is a safe bet because O’Connell has managed to get the most out of everyone, including his quarterbacks.
The defense is quietly one of the better units in the NFL. They don’t have a game-breaker, but they have guys at every position that do their jobs well. Even if McCarthy struggles – and early props indicate that he might – the defense should keep them within striking distance.
Where the Vikings Struggle
The running game for the Vikings is not what it used to be. When Adrian Peterson was running wild, props were a guarantee, and the Vikings knew they were likely to run all over opponents on any given Sunday. That threat doesn’t really exist anymore, and Aaron Jones is solid, but unspectacular.
We can’t help but circle back around to McCarthy. Though Jayden Daniels of the Commanders was excellent last season, it is generally a safe bet that rookie quarterbacks will struggle. Though McCarthy had all year to study the offense, he is basically a rookie and will face the challenges that rookies do in the NFL.
Detroit Lions (
)The Detroit Lions won 15 games a season ago, yet face arguably the most questions of anyone in the NFC North. That’s what happens when you have to replace a pair of coordinators – Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn – who have moved on to NFL head coaching gigs.
Even still, Detroit has one of the best (and most aggressive) head coaches in the league in Dan Campbell. They also have a plethora of offensive talent returning, making the transition to a new coordinator far easier to handle.
What the Lions Do Well
The Lions can run the ball better than 95% of teams in the NFL. The two-headed monster of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs is perhaps unmatched, capable of pounding the ball between the tackles or breaking a long run off the perimeter. When the running game is working well, it sets the passing game up nicely.
Speaking of the passing game, the Lions can do damage from several places. Amon-Ra St. Brown is one of the best receivers in the league, and Jameson Williams has emerged as one of the best big-play threats in the league. Add in Gibbs and tight end Sam LaPorta, and the Lions have one of the most elite pass-catching groups in the NFL.
Where the Lions Struggle
Losing both coordinators will be a challenge for Detroit, no matter what they say. The talent is there offensively, but if teams manage to pressure quarterback Jared Goff, turnovers can follow.
Defensively, it is tough to know what the Lions can actually do. They were one of the teams most devastated by injuries last season, so the hope is that a return to health by impact players like Aidan Hutchinson can make the defense a strong suit.
Chicago Bears (
)Perhaps the biggest wild card in the NFC North is the Chicago Bears. Chicago has been clamoring for a contender for a long time, and the addition of Johnson is providing a level of hope that the franchise has not seen in quite some time.
There is talent on this defense. Defensive back Jalen Johnson is among the league’s best, receiver Rome Odunze has all the potential in the world, and the offensive line looks to be rebuilt. It all hinges on second-year quarterback Caleb Williams and his ability to carry the Chicago Bears on his back.
What the Bears Do Well
Chicago is known for defense, and rightfully so. Roquan Smith remains a high-level linebacker even if he doesn’t harken back to one of the Monsters of the Midway. Their defense has the ability to keep them in each game, even if the offense does struggle.
On paper, the Bears also have the ability to run the ball well. D’Andre Swift has shown the talent to be a high-level back in the past, and the offensive line is built to pave the way. If the Bears can establish the run early in games, it will make life substantially easier for Williams as he learns the new offense.
Where the Bears Struggle
While there is potential for Johnson and Williams to click, we haven’t seen anything quite yet. Williams had flashes as a rookie last season, but he is still an unknown commodity. Will he be able to overcome his struggles reading defenses and holding onto the ball too long?
Unfortunately for Chicago, one of the biggest hurdles isn’t an on-the-field trait. Chicago has earned a stigma as a “loser” in the NFL over the better part of the past decade, a reputation that is tough to shake. Getting over that will be difficult, especially with early hiccups.
Who Will Win the NFC North?
The NFC North division is, without a doubt, one of the toughest in the NFL. There is no “safe bet” to win the division, given that last season was the first time a division had more than one team win 14 or more games in the same season. The Green Bay Packers have the best NFC North odds thanks to the trade for Micah Parsons, but current odds show that both the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings could win the NFC North as well.
