USMNT is brimming with top talent

It's going to be a big year for the United States men’s national soccer team. The Americans have the CONCACAF Nations League playoffs in June, and World Cup qualifying begins in the fall. The under-23 team will also try to qualify for the Olympics for the first time since 2008.

To do all of that, the USMNT program must rely on its youth. So many young players have debuted for the national team or starred for the youth teams in the past year. Here are some to keep your eye on in 2020.

Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund)

Gio Reyna is already doing great things for Borussia Dortmund, and he is only 17. He’s already caught the eye of USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter, who will call him into camp for two friendlies this month in Europe. Reyna could be the best of the youth players, and he is ready to make an impact now.

Ulysses Llanez (Wolfsburg)

Ulysses Llanez made his USMNT debut against Costa Rica in February, and he scored the penalty kick that won the game. He showed tremendous promise in his debut, and he will look to make moves at Wolfsburg to become a primary option in the starting lineup.

Paxton Pomykal (FC Dallas)

Paxton Pomykal is progressing to a point that this season might be his last in MLS. He’s destined for a move to Europe, and he’s shown through quick glimpses he can hang with the big boys. He’s only 20, but the midfielder could poised for another breakout season with FC Dallas and find his way into the regular rotation with the national team.

Indiana Vassilev (Aston Villa)

The 19-year-old from Georgia made his debut this year for Aston Villa, and if he can break into the starting lineup on a regular basis, he could be a creative answer at attacking midfielder. He can also backup the forward position, and that versatility will be welcome on the national team.

Another American youngster in the English Premier League is always a great thing, provided Villa can stave off relegation.

Konrad de la Fuente (FC Barcelona)

Konrad de la Fuente has the potential to become the first American to ever play for Barcelona’s senior team. He’s only 18 and has been playing for Barcelona’s Juvenil A and Barcelona B teams. If he breaks through to the first team at Camp Nou, it would be a monumental milestone for Americans playing in Europe.

Sergiño Dest (Ajax)

Sergiño Dest is the regular starter at fullback for Ajax, both in league and in European competition. He also fully committed to the USMNT last fall and now is one of the primary options at left back or his natural position, right back.

With teams like Bayern Munich and even Real Madrid rumored to be interested in his services, the sky is the limit for the 19-year-old. He is not the future of the USMNT. He is the now.
